COMPANY PROFILE:
S. Samran Thailand Company Limited is a producer and an exporter of handmade bronze and brass products. Our product range includes designer tableware, brass figurines, decorative brassware, various gift items and bronze cutlery, our primary line. We design a wide range of brass items, all coordinated in style and appearance to complement our line of bronze ware. Most raw materials are locally sourced, with copper for example, being refined from recycled electrical wire and other conductive scraps. Tin is mined from the southern part of Thailand and nickel is imported. The production process remains labour intensive and demands skilled craftsmanship.
The idea of making cutlery from bronze was originated by Mr. Samran Poonsawad, our company’s founder, in 1921. He started melting down discarded bronze bowls for recasting into spoons, forks and knives with traditional Thai designs on the handles. During those days, production – entirely done by hand – quaintly took place in the backyard workshop. Local demand steadily grew and this rather unique form of cutlery caught the eye of overseas visitors who requested full cutlery sets for western dining service. As recognition of our name grew, neighbourhood talent was recruited and trained in order for production to keep pace with demand. It was not long before an entire community of 50 families was merrily engaged in crafting bronze cutlery.
Exportation began in 1956 to North American and European markets, which have long since eclipsed our original market of local residents and tourists. Our company has been honoured with several local and regional awards for excellence in product design, quality and workmanship. In 2001, our company was awarded the UNESCO Seal of Excellence for Handicraft Products in Southeast Asia. We are rightly proud to have pioneered the manufacture of bronze cutlery, a true reflection of Thailand’s cultural heritage and craftsmanship.
